Bangkok (September 26, 2019) – In honor of Zero Emissions Day, a worldwide movement that aims to encourage the use of renewable energy sources, Nissan pledges it support for reducing emissions, sharing its data-driven vision on how electric vehicles can play a role in controlling emission levels globally.

Zero Emissions Day 201

As the manufacturer of the world’s number-one selling Electric Vehicle, by driving over 11 billion emission-free kilometers, global Nissan LEAF owners have cumulatively saved 3.8 million barrels of oil every year on average. This translates to more than one million metric tons of CO2 that would be required to drive the same distance by traditional combustible personal vehicles.

“As a global automotive leader, we recognize our role in helping shape a visionary future of mobility that drives towards zero emissions,” said Yutaka Sanada, Regional Senior Vice President, Nissan Asia and Oceania. “While Zero Emissions Day is one day to provide a well-deserved rest to our planet, at Nissan we believe it is a greater opportunity to inspire all in the exploration of solutions for a less polluted tomorrow. Nissan has been a frontrunner in the electric vehicle space more than 70 years, and we believe wider adoption of EVs is the way forward for a sustainable future. The Nissan LEAF, with cumulative sales of more than 430,000 cars worldwide is an EV which does not emit exhaust gases during operation and could help save 4.5 metric tons of CO2 each year per vehicle. We are proud to be at the forefront of this journey and believe ‘Net Zero’ must become the new mantra.”

What is an emission?:

Gases and particles put into the air or emitted by various sources. There are many sources of emissions grouped into four categories: point, mobile, biogenic, and area.

What is Zero Emissions Day?

Introduced in the 1980s September 21, Zero Emissions Day or “ZeDay”, is a day dedicated to stopping all emissions and has grown to be a symbol of the planet’s global connectedness in creating a better tomorrow.

Why is it Important?

In 2018, reports recorded the widest difference between where the world is now and where it needs to be in order to contain greenhouse gases and keep global temperatures within safe limits.

Not only is ZeDay important for the environment, it is important for human health as well. Ambient air pollution is the leading environmental health risk factor worldwide today. With 91% of the world's population living in places exceeding World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines, dirty air contributes to 4.2 million premature deaths annually from heart and lung diseases and diabetes, according to 2018 WHO reports.

Zero starts with you.
