Some 44% of Thai consumers will consider an EV when making their next vehicle purchase decision, research shows
Nissan continued its push for a sustainable future through electrification at SETA 2018
BANGKOK, Thailand (April 3, 2018) – Nissan Motor Thailand recently participated in the Sustainable Energy Technology Asia 2018 (SETA) conference, addressing the trends and future of electric vehicles in Thailand and the rest of the Southeast Asia market.
Peter Galli, Vice of President Communications at Nissan Motor (Thailand) Co., Ltd., recently spoke at SETA and shared with delegates the interesting findings from a recently commissioned survey by Frost & Sullivan on “The Future of Electric Vehicle in Southeast Asia.”
Nissan recently asked Frost & Sullivan to conduct research on the Future of Electric Vehicles in South East Asia. In Thailand, over 300 people participated in the study, which showed that, despite low EV uptake, consumers are mostly very aware of the differences between various EV technologies such as Battery Electric Vehicle (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), Full Hybrid, and Nissan e-POWER vehicles.
“The detailed report for Thailand found that there is significant latent demand for EVs in the Kingdom, with 44% of respondents saying they would undoubtedly consider an EV when they make their next purchase decision,” Mr. Galli said
The survey also found that Electric Vehicle intenders are relatively young and have a strong concern about the environment. Compared to other countries in the region, the intention to purchase an electric vehicle was found to be among the highest in Thailand, with prospective customers ready to pay up to 50% more to own electric vehicle than they would for a comparable conventional internal combustion engine driven car.
“This is a clear indication that Thailand is ready for the future of sustainability, and Nissan will be there for them, providing vehicles with technology that is friendly to the environment,” Mr. Galli said.
The key factors to the adoption of electric vehicles for Thailand include better safety standards, charging flexibility and convenience, and the lower operating costs of the vehicles, the study found.
Given the importance of safety, it was not surprising that respondents opted for “5-star safety rating” as the most preferred feature if they were to purchases or lease an EV. About 62% of respondents put this among their top 3 choices, while 58% were looking for “less than 8 hours for a full charge.
However, the study also found that the lack of requisite knowledge has raised the adoption barriers for electric vehicles. But for Nissan, which has had its Nissan Leaf, the best-selling EV in the world with more than 340,000 units sold across the globe, in the market since 2011, the company has plenty of data to share.
“Nissan Thailand has the vision to push towards a sustainable mobility future. We are highly committed to transforming the way people drive and live, and we aim to build real confidence in electric vehicles and provide all of the information that is needed to help people make a move to using electric-powered vehicles,” Galli said.
That is why, at SETA, Nissan continued to demonstrate its leadership position in the electric vehicle space through its vision to deliver more electrification, connectivity, and autonomy, to move people to a better world. Nissan remains focused on developing a wide range of fuel-efficient vehicles with Nissan Intelligent Mobility at their core, delivering the best quality and environmentally friendly automotive products to meet and exceed customers’ expectations.
SETA brings together delegates from different industries to discuss and exchange ideas on sustainable energy and technology. Energy technology discussions were at the forefront of the event – an area that Nissan continues to lead in the automotive industry.
With its strong commitment to contributing to the sustainable development of society, Nissan is at the forefront of innovative energy and technology, evident through its creation of environmentally friendly vehicles and state-of-the-art technologies under the concept of ‘Nissan Intelligent Mobility.’
Nissan Thailand has already announced its plan to bring the new Nissan Leaf to Thailand. Those who are interested in electric vehicles may view this, the worlds best selling Electric Vehicle, and other vehicles our customers love to drive that are equipped with Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies, at the Nissan booth at the 39th Bangkok International Motor Show until April 8, 2018.
