BANGKOK, Thailand (August 8, 2019) – Nissan in Thailand today shared its vision for the future of mobility in ASEAN cities as electrified and powered by zero-emission electric vehicles, which will help support the positive transformation of the region’s fast-paced urban lifestyle.

In a keynote speech presented at the Delta Future Industry Summit 2019, held today at the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong hotel, Peter Galli, vice president of Communications for Nissan in Thailand, noted how electrification is changing the future of cities, highlighting the automaker’s electrification strategy and the importance of advancing electric vehicle (EV) adoption through collaboration.

“Thailand and ASEAN are entering a new era of mobility, with opportunities built around a robust EV ecosystem via private-public partnerships,” Galli said. “Our ability to provide a comprehensive charging and support system around the all-new Nissan LEAF In Thailand is due to key partnerships with government organizations like the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), and private companies like Delta Electronics.”

These strategic partnerships will enable Thai EV owners to seamlessly access charging solutions at home, work, or on the road, regardless of geography. Thailand’s future EV ecosystem is a topic that Nissan in Thailand is hugely passionate about. Thailand’s current electrification goal is to put 1.2 million EVs on the road by 2036, and the Thai government has expressed its support for green transportation infrastructure developments so as to address the issues of rising emissions, traffic congestion, and noise pollution.

Nissan recently commissioned leading research firm Frost & Sullivan to develop a position paper that examines the evolving role of mobility in future cities across Asia and Oceania. It produced studies on 'The Future of Electric Vehicles in Southeast Asia' and 'Future of the Cities in Asia' that gave insight into consumer behavior across the region.

Research conducted in Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines found that 37% of prospective buyers are open to considering the purchase of an EV as their next car. The Thailand report also found there was significant latent demand for EVs in Thailand, with 44% of respondents saying they would consider an EV when they make their next new car purchase.

The all-new Nissan LEAF, as a full-battery EV, can also be a key component for more liveable and happier cities in the future. Reducing air and noise pollution is an important issue that Nissan is keen to address. With zero emissions and a quiet engine, the Nissan LEAF has the potential to positively improve environmental concerns for societies in Asia and Oceania.

Nissan is also working hard to raise EV awareness with the general public in Thailand. Over 100 members of the Thai media recently participated in a five-day test drive of the all-new Nissan LEAF and experienced Nissan's ‘rEVolution education’ zone, which together offered the first truly immersive EV experience ever organized in Thailand.

At the Delta Future Industry Summit, Galli also joined a panel discussion titled ‘Intelligent Solutions to Air Pollution in ASEAN Cities’  with other industry experts and executives.

Other distinguished participants in this panel discussion included Dr. Manisa Pipattanasomporn, Associate Professor Smart Grid Research Unit, Chulalongkorn University, Mr. Annop Kingkachee, Deputy Managing Director of Operations, EEC Engineering Network; and Mr. Pasakorn Thamwittayakorn, Fan & Thermal Management Senior Business Development Manager of Delta Electronics (Thailand).

During the discussion, Galli told the audience he was proud to work for a global company focused on developing EV ecosystems across the world. “Thailand is positioned to become a leader in Southeast Asia by demonstrating how technology can improve the well-being of Thai citizens against the backdrop of urbanization. These gains can deliver a host of benefits, including reduced noise and air pollution,” Galli said.
