Nissan’s Sanpetch Tangsawapark appointed Head of EVAT Working Group Three

BANGKOK, Thailand (September 17, 2019) – Sanpetch Tangsawapark, the vice president for Corporate Planning, Marketing & Sales Strategy at Nissan in Thailand, has been appointed as part of the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT) Committee and Head of the EV User & Promotion Policy Working Group.

As part of EVAT's effort to work with the Thai government on ways to improve and increase EV development across Thailand, this working group is mandated to encourage electric vehicle (EV) usage and policy development. The need is emphasized as Thailand’s EV use increases, with the Land Transport Department reporting that new registrations of plug-in hybrid and hybrid EVs in the first half of 2019 reached 15,366 units.

In this EVAT role Tangsawapark will support EVAT's efforts to help influence government policy towards developing the country’s electrical vehicle roadmap. EVAT's goal is to help create demand and develop domestic market infrastructure to catch up with rapid improvements in EVs worldwide.

“It is an honor to support EVAT and to continue working with the Thai government on Electric Vehicle initiatives. My experience with Nissan, a leading global auto manufacturer and creator of the world’s best-selling EV the Nissan LEAF, allows me to apply knowledge-based sharing, best practices and ways to improve integration between the government and private sector to rapidly develop Thailand's EV ecosystem for the benefit of society and motorists,” said Sanpetch Tangsawapark.

Tangsawapark and EVAT’s Working group Three will be responsible for helping implement the actions recently proposed by EVAT to promote the EV market and reduce carbon dioxide emissions originating from the transportation sector, said EVAT president Yossapong Laoonual.

The eight actions for the Thai government identified by EVAT include the preparation of an EV roadmap and integrated work from relevant ministries; providing benefits to EV buyers such as personal income tax reductions and non-financial benefits; allowing electric tuk-tuks and taxis to register systematically with clear guidelines; and additional investment privileges for motorcycle manufacturers to localize production of electric motorcycles.

Other actions include encouraging Thai entrepreneurs to develop EVs; creating clear standards for EVs and related components; rapidly expanding the number of charging stations for EVs across Thailand; and providing classes in EV education.

The Thai government has been supportive of the EV industry since March 2017 when investment priveledges were launched , listing EVs as part of 'S-curve' industry. While investment privileges from Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI) expired in 2018, 20 to 30 applications were received from many companies including carmakers, components manufacturers and newcomers to the EV industry.
