Bakery workshop designed to encourage entrepreneurial thinking and aspirations to meet community needs.

BANGKOK, Thailand (September 07, 2018) – More than thirty students from three middle and high schools in Rayong recently received hands-on experience in all aspects of running a small business.

The event was part of a two-day workshop designed to build entrepreneurial skillsets for students in Rayong under Nissan Thailand’s Youth Leadership Development Program (YLD).

The students from Pheraksamata Wittaya School, Wat Suwan Rangsan Community School and Wat Huang Hin School were taught how to set up a bakery and create baked goods. This included learning how to source quality ingredients at reasonable prices, revenue projection, creative and attractive packaging and then how to market their bakery products.

“Nissan Thailand is committed to investing in the future of Thai youth by helping encourage entrepreneurial thinking,” said Peter Galli, vice president of communications at Nissan Thailand. “Real-life experience is critical, so letting them experience first-hand how a small business operates and helping them understand the many processes involved in making it successful, gives them the basis and understanding to think differently about their future career path.”

Nissan has been partnering with CARE International Japan and Raks Thai Foundation since 2017 across eight different schools in Ayutthaya and Rayong. Activities focus on developing leadership skills and providing the occupational skills training necessary for micro-business activities to students.

The program has reached more than 1,200 students in both provinces to date, with a goal of a helping 3,000 students by the time the three-year program ends in 2019.

The program is already creating entrepreneurial aspirations in the students. “I now have new and very valuable skills. I have learned how to calculate costs effectively so as to generate better business profits,” said Khemika Jongcharoenmunkong, a student from Wat Suwan Rangsan Community School who attended the two-day workshop. “As a result of the workshop, we now plan to set up a bakery shop in the school co-operative and, one day, I want to own a bakery shop because Rayong is a tourist destination so there is strong demand for bakery products here.”
