Nissan expands its Youth Leadership Development program to Samut Prakarn
The initiative will help 200 students near Nissan’s plants build leadership skills
BANGKOK, Thailand (December 19, 2018) - Nissan Motor Thailand is expanding its successful Youth Leadership Development (YLD) program to the local community near its Thailand assembly plant in Samut Prakarn province.
Established in 2017, the YLD program is a partnership between Nissan, CARE International Japan, and the Raks Thai Foundation. It initially was focused on helping some 1,200 students across eight different schools in Ayutthaya and Rayong develop leadership skills and provide the occupational skills training necessary to help them develop micro-business skills activities. The goal now is to help 1,400 students acquire leadership skills by the time of three-year program ends in 2019, including in Samut Prakarn province.
"We are delighted to be able to bring this Youth Leadership Development program to Wat Sri Wari Noi school and Wat Hua Khu school, both of which are located in our home province of Samut Prakarn, where the Nissan Motor Thailand assembly plant is located,” said Surachai Nilkumwong, Nissan’s vice president of human resources and administration in Thailand. “Both are educational opportunity expansion schools and we hope that, through the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and other modules, the program will help to give students the leadership skills necessary to participate in the workforce of the future as envisioned under the government’s Thailand 4.0 plan,” he added.
Nissan and Raks Thai will continue to work closely with local communities, local government authorities, the ministry of education, and its employees to train 200 Thai students and 20 teachers at the two schools in Samut Prakarn.
Promboon Panitchpakdi, the executive director of the Raks Thai Foundation, said the organization and Nissan Thailand share the same vision of building a better society for all Thai citizens and residents.
"The project’s nucleus is to focus on education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Under the YLD initiative, Nissan and Raks Thai Foundation have worked together for two years to support the development of analytical thinking and problem solving in real-world situations - both inside and outside the classroom from primary school level upward," he said.
Raks Thai Foundation is the local partner of CARE International tasked with promoting strong communities and assisting the disadvantaged in Thai society. As one of the longest operating NGOs in Thailand since August 15, 1997, its programs reach Thai students nationwide from middle to high school age. Raks Thai implements programs with local experts who understand student needs and help ensure that the programs are properly implemented.
